These four solutions were not installed simply to “fill the courtyard”. They were selected to make the space work better for the people who use it.

After all, even the most dedicated student needs a few minutes to switch off. And, to be honest, sitting on a comfortable bench is always better than leaning against a cold wall.

Outdoor Street Furniture for Educational Centres at ROC van Amsterdam

The project is located at ROC van Amsterdam, one of the leading educational organisations in the region.

The organisation provides vocational education at nine modern MBO colleges located in Amsterdam, Amstelveen, Hoofddorp and Hilversum. Each location offers its own range of courses and areas of specialisation, all directly connected to professional practice.

According to information published by the organisation, ROC van Amsterdam has 33,271 vocational students and offers more than 300 educational programmes. It also provides education for secondary school students and adult learners.

In an environment of this size, outdoor spaces are also part of the educational experience. They do not replace classrooms, of course, but they can improve the daily experience of people who spend many hours at the centre.

A well-equipped courtyard allows students to:

  • rest during breaks;
  • talk to other students;
  • share knowledge outside the classroom;
  • build relationships and new friendships;
  • study or revise in a more informal setting;

The square and diamond-shaped modules, available in high and low versions, can be combined with planters from the same collection. This makes it possible to create compact, linear, geometric or surrounding layouts.

The low benches have a seat height of 450 millimetres, while the higher versions reach 880 millimetres. Both the benches and the planters have a base width of 830 millimetres, making it easier to create visually consistent arrangements.

In an educational centre, this flexibility makes it possible to create spaces for different activities: a quick conversation, a break before the next exam, an informal group meeting or that important moment when someone asks, “Was this topic included in the exam?”

The range includes a 1.8-metre straight module, a curved module with a radius of 1.5 metres and an angle of 90 degrees, and another curved module with a radius of 2.5 metres and an angle of 45 degrees. It can also include an inner backrest, an outer backrest and armrests.

Curved layouts offer an important advantage in educational environments: they make it easier for people to see and talk to one another.

Students do not have to sit in a rigid straight line facing forwards, as though their break were simply another class.

The result is a more social and flexible space where students can connect, exchange ideas, relax and laugh together to reduce their nerves before the next exam.

Valencia Litter Bin: Cleanliness Integrated into the Design

A rest area needs benches and greenery, but it also requires a practical waste management solution.

For this reason, the Valencia litter bin has been installed in its metal and WPC version.

This model has a capacity of 100 litres and can be configured with either top emptying or a side door. It is available in five finishes:

  • metal with an Oxirón finish;
  • metal with a Corten-effect finish;
  • RePlast (recycled plastic);
  • WPC (synthetic wood);
  • tropical wood.

It can also include a roof and different internal systems for holding waste bags.

The metal parts are made from galvanised steel, while the WPC slats provide an appearance similar to wood without the usual maintenance requirements.

The litter bin can be fixed to the ground and includes systems designed to make emptying easier and reduce the risk of the bag tearing.

In this way, waste management becomes part of the overall design without turning the litter bin into that essential element everyone needs but no one wants to look at.

Why WPC Works So Well in Amsterdam’s Climate

Amsterdam’s humid and changeable climate requires materials that can remain outdoors throughout the year.

Frequent rain, moisture and temperature changes can accelerate the deterioration of certain surfaces, particularly when they require regular treatment.

The WPC used by Cervic Environment is made from biomass obtained from rice husks and polymers. Its appearance is similar to wood, but it offers several characteristics that make it especially suitable for outdoor street furniture in educational centres:

  • it does not require specific maintenance;
  • it does not splinter or crack;
  • it resists moisture and temperature changes;
  • it does not deform easily;
  • it withstands impacts and continuous use;
  • it is easy to clean;
  • it can be recycled at the end of its useful life.

The material also has very low moisture absorption, high resistance and a V0 self-extinguishing classification according to UL94.
